One of the most frequent questions I get asked by people just starting their smoothie journey is … do you wash and clean your fruit and veg?
The simple answer is … yes.
Smoothies are made with raw fruits and vegetables. So they don’t benefit from the deep cleansing that cooking bestows. So anything that’s on the produce will end up in you – and whomever is lucky enough to share the smoothie.
Now, most of the time that’s just going to mean a bit of soil, some pesticide residue and the odd slug (I seem to be getting a lot of these at the moment – all the wet weather I guess!).
However, you just don’t know what sort of journey the produce has had – so it’s best to err on the safe side. Especially if you have kids – or anyone not 100% fit – sharing the smoothies with you. If you are doing the smoothie just for yourself – then fine.
Some ingredients don’t need washing – things like frozen fruits and vegetables. Others just need a wipe – things like apples and pears. However, root vegetables should really be cleaned properly.
However, don’t get too worked up about it. If the washing is going to put you off the whole process – then, in my opinion, you’re better off having the “dirty” smoothie than missing out on all that scrumptious goodness. Your mileage may vary!
