A diet smoothie that can be chopped and changed and reused day-after-day…
- ½ banana
- ½ cup rolled oats
- ½ cup frozen berries
- 1 cup iced water
- 2 stalks celery
- 1 large handful of kale
This is a recipe in two parts: the base, or core, that you reuse each time – and the extras you can change each day (or not, depending on what you have in the fridge).
The base gives you slow release energy and the flavours. The oats and banana are a perfect core – as they fill you up and will keep you satisfied for quite a while. The berries add lots of flavour and vital nutrients. Here I’m using a mixture of blueberries, strawberries and cherries. Choose whatever berries you fancy – and feel free to change them as often as you want. This will help keep the smoothie interesting.
The extras are in two parts. A cup full of something like celery, broccoli, fennel, peppers or zucchini (or whatever else you like) … and a large handful of greens – here I’m using kale. The idea is that you can change these two parts each time you make this recipe – ensuring that you get a diverse selection of nutrients. Or just use what you find in the fridge – a great way of using the last of the week’s shopping.
The result is a large glassful that’s both thick and tasty. It goes down well and will keep you satisfied for ages. Bursting with goodness and never boring – not bad for just 200 calories!
