This is an enjoyable balance of four distinct, but complementary, tastes – all in one very smooth and luxurious smoothie.

  • Small chunk of root ginger
  • 1 slice beetroot
  • ½ banana
  • 1 small pear – cored
  • ¼ cup plain yogurt
  • 1 cup iced water

The idea behind this smoothie is to balance the four main tastes: the ginger, beetroot, banana and pear. This produces a complex flavour: slightly earthy from the beet, slightly spicy from the ginger – with the banana and pear on top of that.

You need roughly four times as much beetroot as ginger, two or three times as much banana as beetroot and three times as much pear as banana. This will keep the four roughly in balance.

The result is a very smooth, really tasty, smoothie that’s a wonderful shocking pink!

This is a brilliant smoothie to give someone – then get them to work out all the ingredients. Kids especially love to do this.
